As spring arrives and temperatures rise, migratory birds such as Mandarin Ducks, Cormorants, Spot-billed Ducks, and Chinese Mergansers that wintered in the Longhu Mountain scenic area of Jiangxi Province have started their annual northern migration. According to Xiao Dongyang, a forest ranger at the scenic area, "Based on their patterns in previous years, Chinese Mergansers typically fly back north at the end of February and the beginning of March." By March 3rd, the number of Chinese Mergansers in the area had significantly decreased. To ensure the safety of these migratory birds during their journey, the scenic area will increase patrols and monitoring efforts.

In recent years, the number of Chinese Mergansers wintering at Longhu Mountain has been on the rise, with the largest recorded group reaching 63 individuals in 2024. Additionally, their range of activities has expanded, with sightings now reported in locations such as Baita River in Yujiang District and Erkou Township in Guixi City.

Since the first appearance of Chinese Mergansers at Longhu Mountain in November 2007, local authorities have implemented strict protection measures. In 2008, they designated a 1,800-hectare protected area to provide a high-quality habitat for these rare migratory birds.
