From July 23 to 24, 25 overseas Chinese youths from Spain and the UK visited Anyuan District, Pingxiang City, participating in the first stop of the 2025 "Rekindling Roots in China" Summer Camp (Pingxiang Session). They experienced the charm of Chinese culture and explored Pingxiang's unique characteristics through a blend of traditional culture and modern technology.

Inside Aozhou Academy, campers wearing wide-sleeved Hanfu seemed to travel through time. Red paper danced between their fingertips, swiftly transforming into intricate patterns; brushes glided across paper, with the scent of ink revealing earnest, though still youthful, calligraphy. Under the teachers' hands-on guidance, the ingenuity of paper-cutting and the gravitas of calligraphy gradually allowed the overseas Chinese youths to grasp the millennia-old mysteries of these two traditional arts. "I had encountered paper-cutting in Spain before, but this trip to Pingxiang has truly helped me understand the wonder of this craft," said Zhao Yang from the Barcelona Confucius Cultural School, holding up his work with a smile. "I will introduce Chinese paper-cutting to more people in the future."
Stepping out of the academy, the allure of modern technology proved equally captivating. Inside the Pingxiang Science and Technology Museum, campers gathered around displays of technological innovations, exploring their principles and uses through lenses and notes. In the "Dream of Light and Shadow Science" pavilion, the fantastical visuals of a 3D film, synchronized with the movements of the electric seats, created an immersive experience. "I learned so much about biology and physics," exclaimed Li Yue, a camper from the UK. "These technological achievements are already integrated into daily life, bringing so much convenience to citizens. How cool!"
Additionally, the campers visited the Anyuan Railway and Mine Workers' Movement Memorial Hall and the Young Pioneers Memorial Hall to touch upon the history of the revolutionary era. They strolled through the thousand-year-old Nanzheng Street to savor the local atmosphere, watched the play of light and shadow in the intangible cultural heritage shadow puppet theatre museum, and experienced making Pingxiang huaguo (a local fruit-based pastry) in the "Spicy Red Anyuan" exhibition hall. "The two-day itinerary was rich in content and educationally enriching," said Zeng Xian, the group leader. "It allowed overseas Chinese youths living far from their homeland to deeply feel the charm of Chinese culture and ignite their national pride." Her words captured the essence of this journey to reconnect with their roots.
