On May 27, 2025, the Mianchuan Island wind power project in Pengze County, Jiangxi Province, achieved full-capacity grid-connected power generation, marking the official operation of the Yangtze River Basin's first zero-carbon island powered by large-scale renewable energy.
Nestled in the embrace of the Yangtze River, Mianchuan Island is home to 32,000 residents who have long lived off its fertile farmland. Today, 18 wind turbine generators rise above the landscape, their blades spinning to convert wind into 244 million kWh of clean electricity annually—enough to power the entire island and still deliver 200 million kWh of green energy to the grid each year
From a river island that once “lived at the mercy of the weather” to the “First Zero-Carbon Island on the Yangtze River”, Mianchuan Island’s story reflects China’s commitment and actions in energy transition. Perhaps one day, when you zoom in on the Yangtze River on a map, you’ll see more and more such green dots: each one sharing the same name - a sustainable future.
